WSOC: October 14 Players of the Week

DALLAS – Liberty’s Ivy Garner, LA Tech’s Mary Helen Burford and Delaware’s Sophia Hall earned Conference USA Women’s Soccer Player of the Week honors.

Offensive Player of the Week – Ivy Garner, Liberty – Senior – Hillsborough, N.C.
Garner becomes the first Flame this season to take home Offensive Player of the Week honors after leading her squad to a pair of home wins over Kennesaw State and Jax State. The senior forward totaled six points with a goal and four assists as she was involved in five of the team’s seven goals. Garner opened the scoring in a 5-0 triumph over the Gamecocks while adding two assists later in the match. She ranks 11th in the nation in shot accuracy (.646) and leads CUSA in goals (8), assists (6) and points (22). Liberty (9-3-4, 4-0-2 CUSA) has won three matches in six days and now sits atop the league standings with two weekends to go in the season.

Defensive Player of the Week – Mary Helen Burford, LA Tech – Sophomore – Shreveport, La.
Burford claims Defensive Player of the Week after playing a crucial role on the back line in LA Tech’s (3-11-1, 2-3 CUSA) tight win over NM State. Outside of a goal that was scored away from her defending area, Burford collected a series of headers, tackles and deflections to keep the Aggie offense at bay for the remaining 51 minutes. The sophomore defender has played at least 85 minutes in 12 of her 15 starts this season including a stretch of seven-straight contests recording 90 minutes.

Goalkeeper of the Week – Sophia Hall, Delaware – Freshman – Malvern, Pa.
Hall garners her league-best third CUSA weekly award this season after pitching back-to-back shutouts over Jax State (2-0) and Kennesaw State (4-0). The freshman keeper helped the Blue Hens (10-1-4, 3-1-2 CUSA) secure six points to move into third place in the standings. In Thursday’s victory, the Malvern, Pa., native racked up six saves in 90 minutes of action. On Sunday, Hall was pulled after collecting one save in 71 minutes as fellow goalkeeper Leah Rhinehart closed out the second shutout of the week.
