DALLAS – WKU’s
Annie White and
Erica Houge, along with Delaware’s
Karli Challburg, earned Conference USA Softball weekly honors.
White garners Player of the Week honors, while Houge is the Pitcher of the Week, and Challburg is the Freshman of the Week.
Player of the Week – Annie White, WKU – Junior – Infielder – Paducah, Ky.
White posted a .529 batting average across five games, going 9-17 at the plate including three doubles, two home runs and eight RBI in a 5-0 weekend that included two wins over Big 10 foe Illinois and extended the Hilltoppers (15-3) winning streak to 10 games. Against Illinois on Feb. 27, she went 3-3 with a weekend-high five RBI by way of a three-run home run and two RBI singles in the 12-3 run-rule win. She struck out only once in 21 plate appearances and scored a total of seven runs. In the second game on Friday, she went 3-4 in another run-rule victory over IU Indy, helping WKU match the CUSA single-game record with six home runs. White hit the team’s final bomb with a two-run shot in the second to push the lead to 15-0.
Pitcher of the Week – Erica Houge, WKU – Sophomore – Collins, Iowa
Houge (8-1) threw WKU’s 14
th no-hitter in program history on Sunday against IU Indy. She struck out six and needed only 90 pitches to complete the game, averaging just over 12 pitches per inning. Houge collected three wins in five games across an undefeated weekend for the Tops. In 18 innings of work, she posted a 0.39 ERA and limited opponents to a .036 batting average. She only gave up two hits in 19 innings and struck out a total of nine. Houge also earned the win against Illinois on Feb. 28 to earn WKU's 48th win over a Power Four program. She went the distance against the Illini and allowed her only two hits of the weekend. Houge also threw four no-hit innings to earn the win in a 6-4 triumph over Ball State.
Freshman of the Week – Karli Challburg, Delaware – Pitcher – Houston, Texas
Challburg (3-2) went 2-0 and did not allow a run in 12.2 innings pitched in a 3-1 weekend for the Blue Hens (9-11). The rookie allowed just eight hits and two walks while striking out 14. Challburg pitched a shutout on Sunday against Bryant with six hits allowed and seven strikeouts. She didn’t allow a runner past second base until the sixth inning and shut the door by striking out the side in the final frame. Against Le Moyne, she went 5.2 innings, allowing just two hits and punching out seven. Challburg entered from the bullpen after back-to-back home runs and struck out the first two batters she faced and six of the first 10.
